The origins of progressivism.
The progressive movement aimed to restore economic opportunities and correct injustices in American life. There were four goals: protecting social welfare, promoting moral improvement, creating economic reform, and fostering efficiency. Florence Kelley was important to protecting social welfare. She became an advocate for improving the lives of women and children and was later appointed to chief inspector of factories for Illinois. For promoting moral movement, prohibition was now taking place, which was the banning of alcoholic beverages. Creating economic reform was brought about by a severe economic panic in 1893. Fostering Efficiency was the fourth idea under the progressive movement which made society and the workplace more efficient. Due to the problems that cities were facing, they began to have a need for reforms. Reforms succeeded in almost every state by effecting legislation that banned child labor and set maximum hours. The local government, mayors, governors, working children and elections all were establishing or were effected by reforms. The National Child Labor Committee organized exhibitions and pressured national politicians to pass the Keatring-Owen Act in 1916. The act prohibited the transportation across the state lines of goods produced with child labor. Also, aid was given to the families of workers who were hurt or killed on the job. The Seventeenth Amendment was successful due to the success of the direct primary. The labor laws focused on the children who were working in the workplace. (Section Summary- Kelly)
