Teddy Roosevelt's square deal.
Theodore Roosevelt was not originally supposed to run as president. The governor from New York was urged to run as McKinley's vice-president. President McKinley was assassinated less than half way through his second term and Teddy became president. Teddy Roosevelt was the youngest president and the age of 42. The Square Deal came about when the president saw big businesses victimizing workers. A Square Deal referred to the progressive reforms the Roosevelt administration sponsored. President Roosevelt sought out to solve the problem of hurtful trusts; this led to the Sherman Antitrust Act. In 1902 Roosevelt took it into his own hands to resolve a coal strike that had lasted 5 months. The president resolved the matter by bringing both sides to the White House to talk. Along with trusts and the coal strike, Roosevelt had a part in federal railroad regulation. With the help of Roosevelt, Congress passed the interstate Commerce Act that prohibited wealthy railroad owners from colluding to fix high prices by dividing the business in a given area. Roosevelt went on and pushed the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906. Lastly, Roosevelt also brought to attention, the importance of conserving nature and natural resources. Roosevelt's passion for land and Nature did not compare to that of his passion for civil rights. (Section Summary- Katherine)
